RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of entry passages providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he said. "Including them were thousands of British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
