They're Applying to America What They Did to Christianity

Trumpism's most telling and distinctive moments – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of several weeks, the American president started showing everyone his intentions for an ornate dance hall two times larger than the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the East Wing to construct it.

He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of casualties due to his slashing to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and this week research predicted his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have attempted – truly, no former commander would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the executive mansion to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of some of America's wealthiest, almost all of whom maintain dealings with the government.

We went from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' toward 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'

As confusing as it is to witness the president attempt to overturn the traditional concept regarding democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That is those of us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have watched over the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they turned a figure of compassion into a symbol of hostility who blesses precisely the cruelties that he denounced in biblical teachings; this change developed at a slower pace, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disturbing via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.

A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold

Hence I shall explain the Christ from my childhood, as conceptually the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and since the quickly increasing segment among Americans might have little sense of him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; however I believe that exist valuable insights of substantial value in the Christian story.

It is unquestionably absolutely not the account of an authoritative monarch arising; conversely, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to escape covert authorities. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his teaching focuses on affection for other people, particularly for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, shown by providing food and protecting. Christ's response to violence is to turn the other cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a way to instruct the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing states that when an individual takes your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing too.

The apparent and straightforward reality that the Savior from scripture requests a type of extreme compassion centered on the impoverished is what has always made Christianity rather a controversial faith: appealing to the populace, but due to its inherent radicalness demanding to be contained. During the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.

A Battle for the Best Among Us

Therefore I have felt encouraged to see the persistent defiance to Trump emerge during the previous year. It has been significant comfort to participate in developing the movement that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged electorate to participate in large quantities in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners during all protests and requests to the best parts of American history.

We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you welcome them and receive them or reject?

America is best defended, in other words, by reference to the highest within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended by relationship to that which renders it unique and wonderful, particularly the pattern of Christ. In both situations does it suggest feigning the worst of both America and Christianity was nonexistent; it signifies both humility and faith, a combination that serious American Christians should embrace.
